MEET MATTY SILL

Matty Sill is from a small cowboy town; more or less, his elementary school had 65 kids and three classrooms. Raised in a traditional Western way of life, 4H, cattle ranching, hunting, motto cross, and having big bonfires in the hills was his upbringing. In high school, Sill lived on the small island of Dominica in the West Indies of the Caribbean, kickstarting his love for Aviation. Sill's favorite flying is low and slow, STOL flying, short take-off, and landing. He has found himself in many different roles as a pilot, visiting 98 countries worldwide. Sill's motto is finding the fun in anything in life; he is a go-getter.

Q1: YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHILE WEARING 30 SECONDS OUT?

Traveling, flying my bush plane, hunting, and being outdoors.

Q2: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Jesus. My dad. One of my mentors/workout buddies is a former Team guy from teams 1 and 7, he plays a huge role in my life and teaches me to never quit and always push no matter what. My good buddy is also a commander in the Navy. Pretty much all of my buddies, and people who are trying to actively push themselves in life. I like seeing people seek to find more in life while helping others.

Q3: A SONG YOU NEVER GET SICK OF LISTENING TO?

I listen to so much music, music drives me in life. Country, metal, and hip-hop are generally my go-to genres of music. It depends on what I am doing in life. If I'm out on a road trip, it's a lot of country music. Flying tends to be metal. Snowboarding, dirt bike riding, and wakeboarding is hip hop music. Yet "Five Finger Death Punch, Under and Over It" never gets old.

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR NEXT GOAL, PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

I would like to pursue why I became a pilot, to get into aerial firefighting as a tanker pilot. Especially being from California, we burn badly every year. I'd love to be giving back and help my community with my profession.

MEET AUSTIN ROBERTSON

Austin Robertson shares with us his journey with photography and his passion for motorsports and the exploration of the outdoors. It's inspiring to read Robertson's story, turning his passions into a living. Robertson pursues the unknown and embodies the 30 Second Out mindset.

"While the world was sheltering in place for the pandemic, I found myself on the side of a mountain, surrounded by my closest friends waging a war against a wildfire that ripped through eastern California. I had exchanged my uniform and combat boots for fireproof wool. My commute was no longer a drive. It was a hike with a chainsaw, 24 hours of food, fuel, fire shelters, and two water bottles. Each morning we were greeted by red sunrises and skyscrapers of smoke while a Boeing 747 deployed fire-suppressant chemicals like pink waterfalls on towering flames. At night we’d dig ourselves into the dirt, watch, and listen to the forest crackle and rush around us.
I found that being completely immersed in nature’s most powerful state left me humbled and hungry. After the fires, I took the money I made and invested in a camera with the intent to capture bold individuals pitted against the raw beauty of the outdoors in the same way I had.
Since the fires, I have continued my passion in restoring motorcycles and racing cars. Since I was young, my life has revolved around the connection between man and machine. Both my parents raced cars and I’m proud to continue that legacy. Racing and working on the bikes has pushed my limits further. I think everyone should experience a throttle and an open road.
I think the same thing can be said about art. It’s incredibly easy to fall into the trap of conforming to what others think you ought to create. I say to deny your inhibitions, get out, and capture what you think is beautiful. Fully embrace the chaos and wholeheartedly throw yourself into it.
Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing."

Q1: YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHILE WEARING 30 SECONDS OUT?

If there is a place I've never been to or an experience I've never had, 30 Seconds Out serves as a reminder to be comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone. People ask what it means when I wear my Pursue The Unknown hoodie, whether shooting, riding, racing, or exploring. Pursuing the Unknown means blocking out hypotheticals and living without regrets.

Q2: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My family, close friends, and mentors inspire me, teach me, and push me to be the best version of myself every day. I am constantly humbled by the ingenuity, passion, and drive of the communities I surround myself with.

Q3: A SONG YOU NEVER GET SICK OF LISTENING TO?

Deep by Nine Inch Nails.

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR NEXT GOAL, PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

My next goals include creating a business, pursuing a graduate degree, and attending Special Forces selection.

MEET KARIN POCOCK

Karin Pocock grew up on the west coast of Canada in Steveston, BC a small fishing community on Lulu Island near Vancouver, BC. She spent much of her early life backcountry skiing and mountain biking the North Shore mountains and climbing the granite of Squamish, BC.

Since then, she’s spent most of the past 20 years as a working guide, ski patroller, and avalanche forecaster bouncing between BC, Alberta, and Colorado seeking diverse experiences in work and play. These days Pocock calls Blue River, CO home. She directs professional programs for Silverton Avalanche School and works a fairly full-time schedule as a rock, ski, and mountain bike guide. When not working, you can find her ultra-distance bikepack racing, on trails such as the Colorado Trail, or just enjoying the stillness of the desert after a full day of splitter-crack climbing. She’s always hunting the quiet moments, big skies, good company, and an excellent soundtrack to life.

Pocock is inspiring and embodies a TSO woman, no weak shit. We are stoked to be supporting someone who is committed to teaching the generations after her, she is a Jane of all trades when it comes to guiding. If there is one thing you need to know about her is that she is an utter badass.

Q1: YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHILE WEARING 30 SECONDS OUT?

Just about anything. Feeling comfortable and steazy at the same time is what I seek in all activities. From teaching a certification program to chilling after a long ride, I always feel like 30 Seconds Out has me covered.

Q2: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Anyone who is going full send on life. I think of the perspective shifts that have come from ultra-distance bike racing, my view of what’s uncomfortable has changed. Every time I look at the “no weak shit” sticker on my laptop I think of the first time I rode for 35+ hours and how that caused a paradigm shift. We all have more in us than we think.

Q3: A SONG YOU NEVER GET SICK OF LISTENING TO?

Girls by Slow Magic

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR NEXT GOAL, PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

I’d like to complete the bike-packing Triple Crown in a single year in 2024 or 2025.

MEET JON INGRAM

Jon Ingram was born and raised in Lewisville, North Carolina just outside of Winston-Salem. He is raw and honest when he talks about his life and all the things he's learned and persevered through. There is one thing you can say about the guy, he never quits.
"My father was a Fire Captain for 30 years with the Winston Fire Department and also worked multiple side jobs on his days off from the station to provide for us. From an early age, he instilled in my brother and I to do things right the first time and to always put things back where they belonged. These are lessons that I have come to embrace in my professional career and now that I am a father myself. After witnessing a man have a heart attack while those present stood idly by, my father started a company called Re-Action, LLC in the early 2000’s. He felt a sense of duty to teach public and private companies the basics of CPR and First Aid. This grassroots concept slowly gained traction and expanded into teaching environmental emergencies, first aid, splinting, the use of AEDs, situational awareness, and recognizing potential areas of vulnerability. This platform is what put me on the professional path that I am currently on today along with instilling my daily mantra of preparedness and being self-reliant. Fast forward to 2008 where I started CrossFit at the original CF Winston Salem and I began coaching soon thereafter. I went on to compete in various Crossfit and Olympic Weightlifting competitions which led to becoming a certified instructor in Olympic Weightlifting. I also completed my NC EMT certification and began working as an EMT. My lifelong dream was to become a firefighter so I applied at the Winston Salem Fire Department where my father was wrapping up his 30-year career as a fire Captain. I was hired in January 2013 as part of Class 19, the centennial class for the department. My mornings began before 6:00am with long runs and high-intensity workouts, followed by class work and drill time. After 6 months of rookie school, I became a member of the Winston Salem Fire Department, a brotherhood I grew up observing and experiencing through my father.

In 2014 life as I knew it was rocked when I felt God calling me to a task/mission that I never saw coming. Growing up my family had always been involved in church and mission work traveling to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I had the opportunity to go on the mission trip of all mission trips, 11 countries in 11 months through Adventures in Missions. The application process was long and full of interviews and background checks to ensure my authenticity. The fee was great, but the calling by God to leave my dream career to pursue His people was greater and I knew that He would provide. I wrote a biography of sorts to describe who I was and why I was raising funds to support this mission. After visiting multiple outdoor stores to obtain all the gear I would need to sustain myself in these remote areas, I was ready! I met my teammates, started forging bonds, and then the unfathomable happened. While working out and practicing on my clean and jerk one evening, I heard a POP! This landed me down a dark and ominous road that took years to recover from. I had two hip reconstructions within a year of each other and was sidelined from my very active lifestyle for almost a year in total. This also meant that I was unable to follow through on the mission trip I had worked so hard to join, but God had a different plan for me, one that would teach me patience, perseverance, and many hard but valuable life lessons. This was mentally more difficult to recover from than physically, but I did recover and was able to continue my active lifestyle. My friends and family told me I was nuts for touching a barbell again and signing up for that Spartan race, but nothing could slow me down. As a firefighter/EMT I pushed my body and mind to be better every day and became an EMT Instructor, taught Basic life support at the local trauma hospital, provided private medical standby for many local sporting events, and continued to coach Crossfit. I then ended up under the knife 3 additional times, once on my left knee and twice on my right knee. Again, like always, I brushed these off and got back up stronger than before. As an adrenaline junkie, saying “no” to adventurous situations was not an option for me. Skydiving, being a part of a team that ran 200 miles from Raleigh to Atlantic Beach, in a non-stop race thru the night for 2 days and a marathon team relay race that was ran one 1.6-mile laps at a time are just a few of my adventures. I continue to push through each day remembering that I was given opportunities that some will never have and I will not take them for granted. I enjoy advancing my skills with firearms, taking my preparedness to the next level for my family, growing within my career, and providing skills to citizens to keep them safe. This profession goes from one extreme to the other - installing a car seat for that new mother, to performing CPR, to dragging a hose to combat that fire on the 2nd floor, or picking someone’s loved one up after a fall at 2:00 am. There are no lengths I will not go to when that bell goes off or even when I am off duty and the need arises.

I love God first and foremost; I have many titles but the best is Daddy. My wife, 5-year-old son, and 17-year-old bonus daughter are my support system that I greatly cherish. My passion for tattoos is more than just ink on the skin, it is self-expression through art on my canvas and my scars tell my stories. This upcoming chapter in my life is going to be the best one yet. Always evolving in CrossFit, running, endurance trials, overlanding, and forging new bonds and relationships are my goals and I'm stoked for the opportunity."

Q1: YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHILE WEARING 30 SECONDS OUT?

Being out in the woods, shooting, and improving my skills with firearms. Embracing what it means to pursue the unknown, exercising, my new hobby of overlanding, and building a 4runner. I've been getting out of my comfort zone, growth never comes from inside the comfort zone.

Q2: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

In my line of work, I see many different types of people and disabilities. There are some we come across that just simply choose to give up and let one diagnosis or injury define how they live the rest of their life.  It’s the mentality that is spreading across the nation where we as a society allow people to give up, quit, sit down, and not hold each other accountable. The other side to that is the ones I see every day that have every reason to give up and quit but don’t. Those people are the ones that inspire me to never let age or injury prevent me from exploring new things. Society has put a stigma on what is appropriate at this age or what you can do when you have this disease. That’s not the norm, BREAK that and STAND out. My son truly inspires me every day at 5 years old he is the definition of resilient in his short time here, he most certainly drives me to push one more step every day.

Q3: A SONG YOU NEVER GET SICK OF LISTENING TO?

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman and Show Me How To Live by Audioslave

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR NEXT GOAL, PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

My goal every day is to be one ounce or one percent better than yesterday. Cliché but true, we try (I try) and “eat the elephant” in one bite and that doesn’t work.  Small victories will continue to motivate you and thus motivate the people in your circle. The two bible verses that help define the course of my day every day are:  Proverbs 21:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”  Meaning, take a look at who you surround yourself with. You become the company you keep, so always keep good company or company that makes you want to be better. The other verse that I embrace is John 15:13 which is actually tattooed on my knuckles. “Greater love hath no man than this, which a man lay down his life for his friends.’’ I reached. out to 30 Seconds Out to try and stand for something bigger than me, a chance to grow with like-minded people. Teach, train, and inform the public and family on how to be prepared and stay safe. There is no greater time than now to take on any of these roles because we are in a crisis in this country. Start small, family is the smallest form of government so start there and then go into the community and train, teach, and inform. The last is up to you, how large do you want to take your message? Statewide, the nation? That’s why I reached out to TSO, and that’s why I use my money to go get trained in things I don’t know much about. Go get trained and bring it back to your family. Professionally I just sat for a promotion here at my fire department for Engineer. I am finishing my degree in Homeland Security at Waldorf University online. I want to grow my skills in the medical field and be able to stock enough supplies or share my knowledge so that people come to me for help or training. Short and sweet, I want to train and teach people how to stay alive and keep others alive in the most austere environments or the backyard BBQ. Whatever platform that'll allow me to do so is where I'll go.
